Formerly Beirut DC, Kite C.S. underwent a rebranding exercise into what is now Aflamuna. Aligned with Aflamuna's mission to empower filmmakers and audiences across the Arab region, Kite C.S conceived an identity that brought together the different projects of the institution, and most importantly conveyed its role as a regional catalyst. The identity relays the core concept of transformative collaboration and narrative shift. First and foremost, Kite C.S. helped out in organizing the archival content and images of the 50 graduating classes that were compiled in a publication. A symposium, featuring two roundtables, was presented by Architecture alumni who shared their experiences and highlighted the changes that occurred on the level of the program across the years. Following the symposium, a compilation of the alumni’s works were showcased during the prime exhibition. Hence, another publication was also conceived to reflect on the exhibition itself as well as the alumni projects. Kite C.S. conducted an extensive brand strategy for the lab, positioning it within the regional and local urban research sphere as well as the data visualization landscape. This exercise also helped structure the platform’s various initiatives, projects, and publications, leading to a cohesive brand architecture. The strategy was followed by a bilingual naming process. The identity design began with a bold and dynamic logotype that allows for multiple lock-ups and adaptable relationships with a diverse library of visual elements. Its two distinctive units evoke urban fabrics while reflecting the lab’s collaborative methodologies, learning experiences, and the processes of knowledge production and reception fostered by the Beirut Urban Lab. Kite C.S. conceived a visual identity consisting of Arabic letterforms that mimic the organic nature of pottery making. These “hand-molded” typographic forms allowed for an elaborate system across applications - applied vertically, horizontally, stacked, and isolated. Pairing these forms with an earthy and quaint color scheme created a harmonious blend to suggest the brand’s warm, welcoming and genuine personality. Additionally, the top floor features traditionally furnished apartments under the Dar Khawla name. Kite C.S. conceived an identity that harmonizes Dar Khawla’s heritage ambiance with contemporary charm.
